So benign, in fact, that most people fail to list Tylenol as an over-the-counter medication they take when asked at the doctor’s office. Studies show that this seemingly innocuous little pill may just be anything but, however. It has been linked to liver toxicity, ADHD, Autism, reproductive issues, and impaired fetal development.
In a recent study, researchers focused on the risks of taking acetaminophen while pregnant. They reviewed medical literature from the last 25 years and created new recommendations for pregnant women, calling on clinicians and regulatory agencies to change their guidelines for acetaminophen use during pregnancy. 100 doctors and scientists issued a consensus statement warning of potential links between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and increased risks of ADHD, Autism, and reproductive issues for the baby. They found a twofold increase of risk for ADHD and a threefold increased risk of autism.
Acetaminophen is not only found in Tylenol but is widely used in prescription medications and over-the-counter medications such as Benadryl and DayQuil.
