The fertility world is full of strong opinions, outdated assumptions, and advice that isn’t rooted in the full picture of how the body actually works. And unfortunately, misinformation can lead to unnecessary interventions, missed diagnoses, and wasted time, which is the last thing any woman wants when she’s trying to conceive.
Whether you’re trying naturally or with IVF support, understanding the real science can make all the difference. Let’s break down some common myths I see in my practice every single week.
REALITY:
Not true, not even close. Even in your 40s, there is a great deal that can be done to support egg quality, cycle regularity, hormone balance, and sperm health. IVF can be a helpful tool for some couples, but it isn’t the only option, and it isn’t a magic fix.
If you are doing IVF, you still need to uncover why you’re not conceiving in the first place. Many of the same root causes that prevent natural conception also affect IVF outcomes. Addressing these underlying issues before treatment may improve the chances of implantation, a healthy pregnancy, and a live birth while reducing unnecessary stress and expense.
REALITY:
Unexplained means unexplored.
“Normal” lab work doesn’t tell the whole story. Standard lab ranges are designed to identify disease, not whether your body is functioning optimally for fertility, especially in your 40s. Looking at a more comprehensive panel of labs and interpreting them through a fertility-focused lens can provide additional insight beyond standard fertility testing.
REALITY:
They matter more than most people realize.
Your daily choices influence:
Research suggests that targeted nutrition and lifestyle changes may support better pregnancy outcomes. This doesn’t mean eat and live “perfectly”. It means understanding what your body needs and what may be getting in the way.
REALITY:
Nearly 50% of fertility challenges involve the male partner, yet his evaluation is often rushed or oversimplified.
A comprehensive semen analysis is the foundation of male fertility testing. However, it’s important to look beyond whether the results fall within the laboratory’s “normal” range. Standard reference ranges are designed to identify significant abnormalities, not whether sperm parameters are functioning optimally for fertility.
A more comprehensive semen analysis may also include markers such as DNA fragmentation, white blood cells, agglutination, debris, seminal pH, viscosity, and liquefaction time to provide a more complete picture of sperm health.
When these markers, including DNA fragmentation, are within optimal ranges, additional testing may not be needed unless there are other clinical concerns. However, if abnormalities are identified, further evaluation may help identify potential contributing factors, such as:
Because sperm regenerate on roughly a 70 to 90 day cycle, this provides an opportunity to address modifiable factors that may help support sperm health before the next conception attempt.
REALITY:
Low AMH, irregular cycles, or perimenopause symptoms do not automatically mean you’re out of time.
Symptoms attributed to early menopause can sometimes overlap with other factors worth investigating alongside your provider:
These are all areas that can be supported, and doing so has been associated with improvements in cycle regularity and ovulation.
If you’ve heard any of these myths, please don’t lose hope.
Age influences fertility, yes, but it’s rarely the deciding factor. What matters most is the underlying health of the whole reproductive system, and that is often far more within your control than you’ve been told.
There is often more that can be explored and supported, whatever your age, your past labs, or how long you’ve been trying.
You do not need to navigate this alone. With the right testing, the right plan, and the right support, your fertility story can look very different from what you’ve been told.
This is exactly the work I do with my fertility clients.
Inside my personalized fertility coaching program, we look at what may be getting in the way, work on the foundations that support hormone and reproductive health, and build a clear, evidence-based plan, whether your goal is natural conception or an IVF cycle.
If you’re ready for expert guidance, root-cause answers, and a structured, evidence-based approach to supporting your fertility in your 40s, I’d love to support you.
Let’s see if we’re a good fit and map out your next steps together.
