Did you know that your favorite wine very likely contains the weedkiller glyphosate? Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller and in a recent study from the education group U.S. PIRG, it was found in 19 out of 20 beers and wines. In 2018, it was reported that 100% of the California wines tested contained glyphosate. Exposure to glyphosate has been linked to cancers, infertility, birth defects, and more. A 2013 study showed that “even 0.1 ppb of glyphosate has the potential to stimulate certain types of breast cancer cells”. To give you some perspective, Sutter Home Merlot has glyphosate concentrations of 51.4ppb! Scary stuff, to say the least.

So what can we do? Go organic! Although even organic wines are often contaminated with glyphosate, non-organic wines have been found to have up to 28 times the amount of glyphosate. Wines that are shown to have the least amount of glyphosate residues are USDA Certified Organic, Biodynamic Certified, Clean Label Project Natural Wine Certified, and Glyphosate-Residue Free Certified. When it comes to the region where the wine is from, the drier the region, the less pesticides are generally used. Wines from Italy, Chile, and Argentina typically fare best. Some of the safest brands with the highest standards for producing clean wines are SmartVine, Dry Farms Wine, LifeVine Wine, Great Oregon Wine, LaRocca Vineyards, and Lolonis Family Vineyards.
