As summer winds down, many of us are enjoying our last few weeks of warmer temperatures and longer days by attending or hosting outdoor gatherings. At such events, it often feels as if imbibing sugary, fizzy and/or candy like alcoholic beverages is an essential part of the merriment. So what are we to do when trying to stay healthy while also enjoying our lives? The good news is that when consumed moderately, alcohol can actually provide some health benefits and doesn’t have to thwart your health and fitness progress. Some studies show that moderate alcohol consumption can even improve insulin sensitivity, which ultimately leads to better health and the ability to lose fat more easily.
  • Vodka: As far as hard alcohol goes, vodka is one of the best choices. Since it is distilled and charcoal filtered, your liver won’t be burdened with the task of processing extra toxins. Choosing vodka that has been distilled with grapes or potatoes (versus grains) makes it an even healthier option. Some non-grain distilled manufacturers include Chopin, Ciroc, Glacier, and Smirnoff. To add some extra flavor without the added sugars, mix with soda water, add a squeeze of lime or some fresh crushed mint, and/or choose an infused variety.
  • Gin, tequila, and whiskey: These are your next healthiest options. Just keep your martinis dry and for a healthier margarita, mix tequila, lime juice and soda water to create a sugar-free version. You can also add stevia for a touch of sweetness. If possible, stick with 100% agave tequila.
  • Red wine: Red wine is typically considered the healthier wine to consume thanks to its lower sugar content (compared to traditional white wines) and its high levels of antioxidants, particularly resveratrol. Ideally, choose organic varieties to increase the antioxidant content and decrease the potential contaminants. When drinking any type of wine, always pick the driest option for the least amount of residual sugar. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Merlot are considered dry reds.
  • White wine and Champagne: White wine and Champagne are created by fermenting the grapes without their skin, which is why they have fewer antioxidants than red wine. The highest concentration of antioxidants are contained in the grape skin. These light colored wines still have a place in a healthy diet, however, as they do contain some antioxidants. Dry varieties typically even have fewer calories than red wine. Some dry whites to try are Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Albariño. When selecting a Champagne, Extra Brut is the driest followed by Brut. “Extra Dry” Champagne is actually sweeter than Extra Brut and Brut.
Unfortunately for beer lovers, beer should be avoided when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is very high in carbohydrates and has even been shown to lower testosterone levels, which is problematic for both men and women. Luckily, there are many other healthy adult beverage options to satisfy your wants for every social occasion. Cheers!
