Is BPA-Free Plastic Safe?

Bisphenols are chemicals used to manufacture plastics and epoxy resins used in canned goods. Many plastic and canned products marketed as BPA-free actually contain similar replacement chemicals that studies show are just as harmful as BPA. Bisphenols contained in these plastic and canned containers seep into food where they can act as a powerful endocrine disruptor, meaning they interfere with the normal function of the body’s natural hormones.

Study after study has linked bisphenols to miscarriages, infertility in both sexes, reproductive cancers, neurodevelopmental delays in children, changes in immune function, and lower birth weight and length.

Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to avoid all plastic, but we can make easy swaps of the things we use most often to help protect our health and fertility. Use glass, stainless steel, silicone, or paper products to store food and, when possible, avoid purchasing foods packaged in a can or plastic. It’s also critical to never heat plastic, including leaving plastic bottles or containers in the hot car or sun as heat enhances the ability of the chemicals to seep into your food or beverage.
