Bisphenols are not only found in plastic food and beverage containers, but are also used to make cash register receipts (the kind they hand you at the grocery store), printed tickets, boarding passes, and luggage tags.
Research has shown that just by touching these types of paper products the chemicals make their way into our bodies and disrupt our hormones. A 2013 study showed that less than one part per trillion of BPS can disrupt a cell’s normal functioning, potentially leading to adverse health effects. Another study shows that skin contact with the hormone-mimicking chemicals may expose people to their harmful effects for longer than if the chemicals had been eaten! After touching one cash register receipt, the bisphenols can be detected in the blood for at least a week after contact. A recent study of more than 1,800 American adults detected BPA and BPS in 95 and 89 percent of participants, respectively.
So how can you protect yourself?
- Say NO thank you to receipts!
- If an e-receipt isn’t available and you need one, fold the receipt with the printed side in and hold it from the backside.
- After touching the receipt, wash your hands thoroughly.
- Do not use hand sanitizer before or after handling receipts. Studies have shown that the bisphenols are absorbed more quickly and extensively when using hand sanitizer.
