Staying Healthy During the Cold & Flu Season | Vitamin D3 with K2

Immune health is always a top priority when trying to conceive. It’s hard to think about making babies if you’re stuck in bed with a bad cold or the flu (or worse!). In this series, I’m going to review the science-backed, immune-boosting supplements my family and I rely on to stay healthy year round. As an added bonus, these are some of the same supplements I recommend to help keep our cells young and fertile.

The most powerful studies I’ve seen regarding immunity and overall health are about vitamin D. I won’t go into detail here about the powers of this vitamin to help preserve fertility or its detoxifying properties, which can help prevent genetic damage. You can read more about that in my other posts. Here I want to dive into the vast amount of research showing how this vitamin can help keep our immune system strong and fight off even COVID. Studies show that patients with a vitamin D deficiency are 14 times more likely to have a severe or critical case of COVID-19 and are 50% more likely to get a viral infection.

Sadly, more than 50% of the population is deficient in vitamin D. This deficiency rate even applies to people that live in sunny locations. And it’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from diet alone. Most practitioners agree that supplementation is necessary. Holistic doctors recommend that the level of vitamin D in the blood is between 50 – 80 nmol/L.

Vitamins D3 and K2 work synergistically and, therefore, it’s important to take them together and at the proper ratio. In addition to helping maintain hormonal balance, vitamin K2 ensures that the calcium you consume through your diet is properly absorbed and reaches the bone mass, while preventing arterial calcification. I recommend @thornehealth D/K2 Liquid product as it has an optimal ratio of these two vitamins. If possible, have your doctor check your vitamin D levels to help determine the appropriate dose for your body. If you’re unable to do that, 4000 IU (8 drops of Thorne’s D/K2) per day is considered a safe dose for adults to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.

* As always, please talk to your doctor before starting to take any new supplements.
