That said, when trying to conceive I made a huge effort to reduce my intake of sugars and carbohydrates (the treat I’m eating in this photo happens to be grain and sugar-free ).
Studies show that when women (and men!) consume diets higher in sugar, it takes them longer to get pregnant and they are more prone to infertility. When too many sugars and carbohydrates are eaten, insulin levels spike, leading to hormonal disruption. For women, elevated insulin levels can cause an overstimulation of male sex hormones, which decreases the hormones necessary for ovulation and implantation. Research also shows that high blood sugar and insulin levels increase the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and miscarriage.
In preparing my body for conception and pregnancy, my diet primarily consisted of high-quality proteins and fats with lots of organic veggies and 1 – 2 pieces of organic fruit each day. I certainly didn’t always eat “perfectly”, but just did my best. Luckily, studies show that following a strict sugar-free or low-carbohydrate diet isn’t necessary to improve pregnancy outcomes. Even by slightly reducing your overall sugar and carbohydrate intake, while increasing your protein intake, you can improve your chances of conceiving a healthy baby.
