What Are Microplastics?

If you’ve been following me for a minute you already know I’m a huge believer in reducing the amount of plastic in our lives. It’s important to protect our health, our fertility, and the planet.

But what the heck is this relatively new term microplastics?

‘Microplastics’ is a category that scientists use for any plastics smaller than 5mm. These tiny plastic particles result from the breakdown of larger plastics and occur as by-products of production.

Since scientists discovered plastics in seafood in 2013, they have been rushing to study the tiny plastic specks that are in marine animals — and in us. So far, scientists have seen microplastics everywhere they have looked – the ocean, Arctic snow, Antarctic ice, table salt, drinking water, and all types of foods. In our homes, they are drifting in the air and become dust particles.

Sadly, researchers have also found that babies have 10 to 15 times the amount of microplastics in their poop compared to adult feces. Babies are likely more exposed as a result of putting plastic toys in their mouths, drinking from plastic baby bottles or sippy cups, and generally putting dust-contaminated objects in their mouths.

No published study has yet directly examined the effects of microplastics on people, but animal studies have shown exposure to microplastics can lead to lowered sperm counts, intestinal inflammation, and fewer, smaller pups.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE OUR EXPOSURE TO MICROPLASTICS:

– Vacuum regularly to remove dust particles as they contain microplastics (and other toxins!)
– Use a stainless steel or glass reusable water bottle (or baby bottle)
– Use glass food storage containers (and especially never heat or freeze plastic “Tupperware”)
– Swap your products for non-toxic versions (check out my Product Guide for highly-rated, safe products)
– Remove processed foods from your diet as much as possible
– Ditch plastic clothing – polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers are forms of plastic
– Choose baby toys made from organic fibers, non-toxic wood, or 100% natural latex or rubber
