Did you know that the microbiome of fertile men and women is measurably different from those experiencing fertility challenges?
Your microbiota (the trillions of bacteria that live in and on your body) play a crucial role in nearly every aspect of health. In the gut, these beneficial organisms support digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and protection against harmful pathogens. They also communicate directly with the endocrine system, helping regulate key reproductive hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
When the microbiome becomes imbalanced (a condition known as dysbiosis), it can interfere with hormone regulation, increase inflammation, impair nutrient absorption, and disrupt immune signaling—all factors linked to infertility and even higher miscarriage risk. The surprising part? Nearly half of people with dysbiosis have no symptoms at all. For the rest, signs may include bloating, food intolerances, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, recurrent genital infections, joint pain, skin issues, or even mood changes like depression.
In my practice, about 75% of women trying to conceive test positive for some level of dysbiosis that needs correction before pregnancy is possible. Treatment can range from dietary and lifestyle changes to targeted supplements—and sometimes includes more advanced strategies like herbal protocols and other interventions to fully rebalance the gut and vaginal microbiome. Supporting gut health is not optional; it’s foundational for successful conception.
Lifestyle habits that support a healthy microbiome include:
• Limiting processed foods
• Reducing sugar and high-carbohydrate intake (even high-sugar fruits)
• Eating fermented foods daily (1–2 tablespoons, 1–2 times/day)
• Minimizing exposure to toxins in food and at home
• Using antibiotics only when truly necessary
• Prioritizing deep, restorative sleep
• Spending time outdoors every day
• Moving your body regularly throughout the week
A thriving microbiome is one of the foundations of optimal fertility and one of the most overlooked. By supporting gut health, you support hormone balance, immune resilience, and your body’s ability to successfully conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy.
