Unexplained Infertility?

Being told you have “unexplained infertility” can feel like hitting a wall, but in reality, it may be a sign that additional factors haven't yet been explored. Fertility isn’t random, and it’s rarely “unexplainable.” When you zoom in on gut health, hormones, the microbiome, blood sugar, toxins, stress, nutrient status, and more, additional pieces of the fertility puzzle often come into focus. This post breaks down the often-overlooked root causes behind “unexplained infertility” and can provide greater clarity on your journey.

Have you been told you have “unexplained infertility,” “secondary infertility,” or simply “old eggs”?
If so, you’re not alone, and you’re certainly not out of options.

These labels are often given when standard fertility tests come back “normal.” But normal doesn’t always mean optimal, and it doesn’t necessarily mean everything is functioning the way it needs to for conception.

Before accepting a vague diagnosis, it’s worth taking a closer look at the many interconnected factors that may influence egg quality, ovulation, implantation, and early embryo development.

These are some of the key areas I evaluate with every client as part of a comprehensive, root-cause approach to fertility.

Gut Health

Gut health plays an important role in nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammation, and hormonal health. Many women with imbalances in their gut microbiome have few or no digestive symptoms, making it an area that’s often overlooked.

Vaginal Microbiome

Emerging research suggests the vaginal microbiome may influence sperm survival, implantation, and early pregnancy, yet it’s still rarely included in a routine fertility evaluation.

Blood Sugar Stability

Blood sugar balance plays an important role in metabolic and hormonal health and may influence ovulation, inflammation, and overall reproductive health.

Thyroid Function

While TSH is commonly measured, a more comprehensive thyroid evaluation may also include free T3, free T4, thyroid antibodies, and, in some cases, reverse T3 to provide a more complete picture of thyroid health.

Uterine Health

Is your uterine environment prepared for implantation? Your uterine lining, blood flow, and inflammation levels all directly influence whether an embryo can attach and develop, yet many women never receive a full assessment of their uterine health.

Vitamin D Levels

Is your vitamin D in the optimal range?
Low levels affect hormones, immunity, egg quality, and implantation — and are extremely common.

Toxin Exposure

Environmental exposures such as mold, heavy metals, plastics, and pesticides may influence hormonal health and overall reproductive health, making them important factors to consider.

Nervous System Health

How well are you managing daily stress and supporting recovery?
Chronic stress shifts hormone production, impacts ovulation, and increases inflammation.

Protein Intake

Are you eating at least 100 grams of protein per day?
Protein supports hormone production, stable blood sugar, mitochondrial health, and egg quality.

Male Partner Evaluation

If your semen analysis includes DNA fragmentation testing and the results fall outside the optimal range, it’s worth looking deeper. A comprehensive evaluation of hormones, nutrient status, oxidative stress, and environmental exposures may help identify factors that could be influencing sperm health.

What “Unexplained Infertility” Really Means

When you hear terms like “unexplained infertility” or “old eggs,” it often means this:

There are additional factors that haven’t yet been fully explored.

While answers aren’t always straightforward, a more comprehensive evaluation helps uncover contributing factors that were previously overlooked. Identifying and addressing those factors may help support fertility, whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or pursuing IVF.
