Probiotics & Fertility

Probiotics are commonly used to boost immunity and improve gut health, but did you know that they are also important for fertility?

The microbial communities that live in and on our bodies, called microbiota, play a vital role in our overall health. Dysbiosis occurs when the microbiota is out of balance. Dysbiosis has been shown to contribute to endocrine and metabolic disorders, such as bacterial vaginosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis. All of these conditions have strong links to fertility challenges. Unfortunately, dysbiosis is incredibly common. One study shows that around 40% of IVF patients have abnormal vaginal microbiota.

Luckily, by taking certain strains of beneficial bacteria many infertility issues can be improved or resolved. Studies show that taking probiotic supplements, particularly lactobacillus rhamnosus or lactobacillus reuteri, can improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes for many women by restoring their vaginal microbiome.

Below are my two favorite probiotic supplements to support healthy fertility and pregnancy.

Metagenics Ultraflora Women’s Probiotic

Jarrow Formulas Fem-Dophilus
