Red light face masks have become very popular as the light’s abilities to promote collagen production, heal wounds, and reduce inflammation have been well established. My husband and I use our red light just about every night to alleviate muscle knots. When it comes to fertility, some ground-breaking research has been recently published regarding red light therapy’s ability to improve egg and semen quality.
Research conducted in Denmark and Japan shows that it may be possible to slow down the reproductive aging process! The studies show that red light therapy used on points on the neck and over the abdomen appears to enhance mitochondrial activity, increase blood flow, and helps to reduce oxidative damage. This is hugely important because when mitochondrial function declines, the quality of eggs and semen drops, and fertility challenges set in. Oxidative damage and reduced blood flow are also considered major contributors to infertility.
In the Danish study, women that used red light therapy had a 66% pregnancy rate after at least 4 years of failed fertility treatments. For men, studies show that even after just a single session of red light therapy, sperm motility improves by 2-5 times in males with previously low counts.
How to use red light therapy? For women, typically 3 red light therapy sessions per week where the light is applied directly over the abdomen and/or to the neck for about 20 minutes has been shown to improve fertility outcomes.
As exciting as this research is, of course red light therapy and other similar therapies cannot compensate for an unhealthy diet, poor quality sleep, or a high level of exposure to toxins. These types of therapies are meant to complement a healthy lifestyle.
