Found naturally in several foods, especially in fruits and vegetables, vitamin C is an essential vitamin, meaning our bodies can’t produce it. As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C can fight free radicals, decrease inflammation, and strengthen our body’s natural defenses. It promotes the production of white blood cells, which help the body fight infection. It also improves the function of these white blood cells while protecting them from damage. It even boosts antibody production and natural killer cell activity.
Vitamin C has been shown in numerous studies to prevent and treat viral and bacterial infections. A few dozen placebo-controlled trials revealed that taking 1 g of vitamin C daily reduced the duration of respiratory virus infections. Vitamin C and vitamin D levels are frequently very low in critically ill COVID-19 patients. According to one study, 17 out of 18 COVID-19 patients had undetectable vitamin C levels, with one patient having a very low level. Another study also reported low vitamin C levels in COVID-19 patients, with non-survivors having half the level of survivors. When it comes to pneumonia, studies show that people who have pneumonia tend to have lower vitamin C levels, and vitamin C supplementation has been shown to shorten the recovery time.
To stay healthy, everyone in my household supplements with a small dose of vitamin C daily. We love Innate Response’s C Complete Powder (whole food blend). When possible, I always prefer to take food-based supplements as they generally have a higher absorption rate and are more easily digested.
