Immune health is always a top priority when trying to conceive. After all, it’s hard to focus on making babies if you’re stuck in bed with a bad cold or the flu (or worse!). In this series, I’m reviewing the science-backed, immune-supporting supplements my family relies on year-round — many of which also help keep our cells young and fertile.
Vitamin D3 & K2: The Dynamic Duo for Immunity and Fertility
Few nutrients have as much research supporting their role in immunity and overall health as vitamin D. Beyond fertility and detoxification benefits (which I’ve covered in other posts), vitamin D plays a critical role in supporting the immune system. Studies show that people with vitamin D deficiency are:
-
14 times more likely to develop a severe or critical case of COVID-19
-
50% more likely to catch a viral infection
Unfortunately, over 50% of the population is deficient in vitamin D, even in sunny climates, and it’s difficult to get enough from diet alone. That’s why supplementation is widely recommended, with holistic practitioners suggesting blood levels between 50–80 nmol/L.
Vitamin D works best when paired with vitamin K2, which ensures calcium is absorbed properly, supports bone health, prevents arterial calcification, and contributes to hormonal balance. I recommend Thorne D/K2 Liquid, which provides an optimal ratio of these two vitamins. If possible, ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels to determine the ideal dose for you. If testing isn’t possible, 4000 IU daily (8 drops of Thorne D/K2) is considered safe for maintaining healthy levels in adults.
