PFAS are commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment. They also accumulate in humans and wildlife with serious adverse health effects.
Although scientists are still learning about PFAS exposure, many studies have already linked very small doses of PFAS to cancer, reproductive harm, adverse pregnancy outcomes, low birth weight, immune system damage, and other diseases.
Where exactly are PFAS hiding?
- MAKEUP: A recent study found that nearly half of the cosmetic products tested contain PFAs. The study reviewed over 200 cosmetic products from Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and Target and found the highest levels of these chemicals in foundation, lipstick, and mascara.
- NONSTICK COOKWARE: Although the original PFAS used to make Teflon cookware has been taken off the market, Teflon and other brands of nonstick cookware are now produced with new PFAS that may be just as harmful.
- FOOD WRAPPERS: PFAS are widely used to coat paper and cardboard wrappers for fast food and bakery goods. Yet another reason to skip fast food!
- STAIN-RESISTANCE: Stain-resistant furniture and carpets treated with Scotchgard, Stainmaster and other fabric treatments contain PFAS.
- CLOTHING: Stain and water-repellent clothing, such as Gore-Tex usually contain PFAS.
- WATER: Currently 49 states are known to have PFAS contamination in their drinking water.
