But, did you know that regular use of fluoride can be harmful to your health? In studies, exposure to high levels of fluoride has been linked to disrupted hormones, decreased fertility, reduced IQ levels in children, cognitive problems in adults, and diminished kidney and liver function.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral used in dental products and is also added to many local water supplies. It is most commonly used to strengthen teeth and help prevent cavities. Unfortunately, these benefits can come at a huge cost to other areas of our health. Since the 1940s, fluoride has been added to local water supplies to help prevent tooth decay. While communities with high fluoride concentrations in their water do have reduced rates of cavities, they also experience decreased birth rates, reduced fertility, and the children have significantly lower IQ scores compared to those residing in low-fluoride areas.
During pregnancy, it’s especially important to avoid fluoride as it readily crosses the placenta. Fluoride exposure during pregnancy has been associated with lower IQ scores in children.
While a little bit of fluoride has been shown to be safe, many of us are exposed to potentially toxic levels through the daily use of fluoridated dental products and drinking water. To reduce your daily fluoride exposure, switch to a fluoride-free toothpaste and mouthwash (I love the brands Jason and Desert Essence). You can also install a reverse-osmosis water system, which filters out added fluoride.
